Little Gulls - 4CY

Saturday, February 22nd 2014

While many observers have referred to all of the Little Gulls currently at Cogden Beach as being 'adults', one or more of the gulls that I photographed there on February 18th might best be described as 4 CY, Third-winter sub-adult bird/s.

Maling Olsen and Larsson make the following note in Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America
.

"Third -winter (Aug-Apr) as adult winter; birds with black outer web to P10 and / or dark streaks on outer primary coverts, and grey (not black) underwing coverts, (as) probably this age"

The first three photos below show the same bird. I am undecided if the fourth is a different individual.

Among the first Little Gulls to be found at Cogden Beach this winter, along with the 'adults' was a First-winter bird. I would be interested to hear if a Second-winter gull appears and to document it accordingly.
