There was something fishy about the 'Iceland Gull' I found in the pouring rain at Barleycrates Lane this afternoon.. or so it turned out once the bird had gotten up and extracated itself from the small flock where it lie partially hidden. Imagine seeing the bird in the first photo, with its back end half hidden, and you might, I hope, excuse the initial ID error. This was made worse by the fact that I was already conditioned to 'expect' the species here as Martin saw one a few hundred yards away the other day.
Once the darkness of the primaries became obvious, it was evident to all concerned, and thankfully there weren't many involved, that the bird is simply - well almost simply, a Herring Gull.
