No. 2 Expect the Unexpected
Brunnich's and Black Guillemots both here at Portland Harbour on the same day... along with Common Guillemot and Razorbill apparently as well.

It now transpires that this bird appears to have been seen several times here in previous days by a mutual friend who hadn't yet managed to get to grips with it fully. However, it's full credit to Debby 'Seamist' for securing the first photos and immediately tweeting them out 'on site' by photographing the back of her camera with her mobile, as husband Pete suggested the bird's likely identity.
Brunnich's Guillemot is 'almost unheard' of in England (get the gist of it's UK status here). Quite a few of Portland's lifelong birders, including myself, have seen the species in northern Scandinavia, but never in the UK. It's a 'Mega' turn-up for the Island, county and country. The occurrence here is entirely unexpected but appropriately coincides with the simultaneous appearance of a White-billed Diver in Devon.
